Sposalizio dell’ Albero / Wedding of the Trees

Every year, on May 8th (11AM to 1PM) , the town of Vetralla in the Lazio region (near Rome) Italy, has a peculiar ceremony:

The mayor of the town, wearing his tri-color sash, will reinstate its’ sovereinty over the forests.

The wedding is performed between two giant oaks that are decorated with veils and flower garlands.
Each citizen of the town receives a cubic meter of firewood every year.  They even plant new trees, while a picnic lunch is offered to all, compliments of the town.
Location : Vetralla, Lazio Region (near Rome)
