68th Venice International Film Festival
AKA: La Biennale di Venezia When: August 31st through September 10th, 2011 Where: Venice Lido
The oldest film festival in Italy, and one of the most prestigious in the world, takes place in Venice every September.
There are almost 2 dozen films competing for the festival's awards. The most prestigious are are the Leone d'Oro (Golden Lion), which is awarded to the best film screened at the festival, and the Coppa Volpi (Volpi Cup), which is awarded to the best actor and actress.
Opening this year's festival is a political thriller directed by and starring George Clooney called "The Ides of March". Other notable screenings include "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy", "A Dangerous Method" and "Carnage".
The director for the 68th edition will be Marco Müller. He has been heading the Venice Biennale's Cinema section since 2004.
