A centuries-old Naples tradition, The Miracle of San Gennaro

Come watch a twice a year tradition at the Duomo di San Gennaro, in honor of the patron saint of Naples, who was beheaded in the year 305 A.D. Legend has it that some of the blood from the beheading was preserved in two glass bottles that are stored at the Treasure Chapel in Naples. During a mass ceremony, some of the dried powdery blood is shown to thousands of spectators. If the blood liquefies, all the Neopolitans will rejoice in jubilation, as that foretells protection against earthquakes, volcanoes, etc.

This celebration takes place twice a year, once on September 19th, and the other on the first Sunday in May.

Pictured below is the image of San Gennaro, at an Italian festival in the United States.  No wonder why San Gennaro is so revered, he comes bearing dollars!
