In Italy you will see tons of scooters (Italian language lesson - motorini or vespe) or mopeds as a dominant form of transportation for many of the locals. And with good reason: current gas prices in Italy are right around $8.00 USD per gallon. If you plan on living there, using a moped in makes a lot of sense. Should I rent a moped while I'm in Italy? Mopeds are not for the faint of heart in Italia. If you've never ridden one in a big city, Italy is certainly not the place to start your driving education. Many moped drivers will weave in and out of traffic. This is not a good place to be a copy-cat unless you have done it before. In fact, it'll probably be tough to find a place in one of the bigger cities that will rent one to you. However, if you are in a small resort-type beach town, or a quiet rural area, renting a moped can be a lot of fun. Here are the requirements to rent a moped
